Commonly Asked Questions
Who is it for?
Everyone! Whether you’ve been following Jesus for five minutes or 50 years, you will benefit from 40 intentional days to build-up the habits and practices of your faith in Him. We even have a kids version available for families to do together. That option can be found on the registration form.
How do you do the Being Like Jesus challenge?
Complete daily readings and simple action steps, paired with our worship services and sermons, and share your experience alongside one or more people from outside your household.
Over 40 days, you support each other and share your progress during a brief, once-a-week check-ins via Zoom, phone calls, text groups, etc., or safe in-person gatherings when/where appropriate.
How is this different from the Red Letter Challenge?
Red Letter Challenge was about outward things Jesus calls His followers to do. The Being Like Jesus Challenge focuses on inward habits Jesus modeled in His relationship with God the Father. Bible readings and devotional book readings are combined for better flow and focus on shorter biblical passages. Daily activities are more personal, but also less reflective/introspective.
What should I do in January if it doesn't start till February 1?
February 1 is Day 1, however, the Being Like Jesus book has a lot of introductory content for how to best use and get the most out of this challenge, details on the different keystone habits we will look at, and how to let Jesus guide your story.
January is a great time to get oriented to the book and also invite someone to do the habit-building challenge alongside you. Form a group of friends to commit together, or indicate on the registration form that you would like help finding a group.
How much of a daily time commitment is the Being Like Jesus Challenge?
The reading itself will only take about 5-10 minutes per day. Reflection and spending time on the daily challenge may take longer depending on how much time you put into it.
What if I already have a lot of those habits in place?
That's great you have established spiritual growth habits! If you’re someone who already has a strong foundation in things like Bible study or prayer, this is an opportunity to encourage or lead others. We love that we are a multi-generational church, and we want to learn from each other and spur one another on in being like Jesus. This challenge is meant to be done as a whole church body which means that those who've been following Jesus for a long time will do this as well as those who are new to the faith. We need those who've been following Jesus for longer to lead by example in this. Plus, even if you have established spiritual growth habits there are sure to be reminders and refreshers in some areas of this challenge.
There is also an opt-in registration track called Being Like Jesus Challenge+, for motivated individuals featuring additional in-depth resource recommendations, Bible study, and interactions organized via a Realm group. You will have the option to opt-in to this on the registration form.
I already have a Bible study plan I'm doing. Why should I do the Being Like Jesus Challenge too?
This challenge is meant to be done as a whole church body, so we want you to participate with us! Imagine how Fairfield will be different after thousands of Black Rockers do a 40-day habit-building focus to be like Jesus. This is designed to be completed in a few simple steps each day, so it can be fit into any schedule. If something comes up and you miss a day, that's okay too! There are a lot of life-changing takeaways from this 40-day challenge, so any amount of time you spend building these habits will be beneficial to spiritual growth.
How do I get into a group?
The Being Like Jesus Challenge is designed to be completed with at least one person outside of your household. We need one another for encouragement, accountability, and community. Share your experience with a group you’re already in, create your own group, or we will help you find a group. You can indicate you would like help finding a group on the registration form.
How do I do the Being Like Jesus Challenge with my kids?
We believe the best results happen in community, so set aside some family time, and take on the challenge to be like Jesus together! Kids will not just learn how Jesus practiced these five keystone habits in His life, but every day they will be challenged to bring these habits into their own lives. 1 John 2:6 says, “Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did.” This book helps kids learn to live “in Him” by living “like Him.” Many of us want to help our kids grow to know and be more like Jesus but we don't know where to begin. The Being Like Jesus Kids Challenge is a great way to start the habit of having family time centered around that goal.
Do I have to do every daily challenge?
We encourage you to do every challenge to get the most out of this book. But we understand that sometimes things come up. If you miss a day, that's okay! Don't give up, and don't feel like you are behind. There are a lot of life-changing takeaways from this 40-day challenge, so any amount of time you spend building these habits will be beneficial to spiritual growth. Each keystone habit stands alone and is not always built on the previous lesson, so you will be able to learn and apply the material at any of the points you jump in.
Does each person in my house need their own book or can we share?
We recommend everyone have their own book since there will be a lot of personal reflection opportunities.
What is Being Like Jesus Challenge+?
This is an opt-in registration track for motivated individuals featuring additional in-depth resource recommendations, Bible study, and interactions organized via a Realm group. You have the option to opt-in to this on the registration form.
Can I pay for my book in cash?
Yes, you may pay for your book in cash if you are picking it up from the church. We will have a hard copy of the registration form for you to fill out at that time.
